The Homeschool Science Program (HSP) presents free materials science workshops, at the Sciencenter in Ithaca, NY, on select Tuesdays, 2-3 p.m. November 2010 through March 2011 for children ages 6-13 and their adult guardians. The workshops are hands-on and encourage students to explore how materials interact with each other. Upcoming workshops: November 9, 2010, Bridge Building; December 14, 2010, Sounds of Science. The 2011 DuPont Challenge invites students in grades 7-12 to write a 700 to 1,000-word essay discussing a scientific discovery, theory, event, or technological application that has captured their interest. Prize include $5,000-$2,000 U.S. Savings Bonds and a trip to Disney World and the Kennedy Space Center. Application process open Nov. 15, 2010 through Jan. 31, 2011.

The 2011 Davidson Fellowships recognize high-achieving young people with scholarships of $50,000, $25,000 or $10,000 that can must be used at any accredited institute of learning. Applicants must submit an original piece of work recognized by experts as significant and with the potential to make a positive contribution to society. Areas in the program include Science, Technology, Mathematics, Music, Literature, Philosophy, or “Outside the Box.” The deadline to apply is March 2, 2011, with preliminary deadlines on February 2 and 16, 2011.
