Looking Down from on High

Observation platforms usually open up broad scenic vistas but seldom let you see what’s directly below. With new creations of laminated safety glass, however, that’s changing. The Skydeck of Chicago’s Willis Tower, formerly the Sears Tower,  has added four glass-bottomed balconies, nicknamed The Ledge, which let tourists peer down from the 103rd floor to neighboring rooftops  and streets. The wrap-around observation deck of China’s Oriental Pearl TV Tower similarly shows off views of downtown Shanghai and the Huangpu River, some nine hundred feet down.

Shanghai’s Dream Cube Transfixes

Every few years a grand international Expo (historically known as the World’s Fair) is held in one of the world’s largest cities. According to Wikipedia, the purpose of these Expos is to “present new inventions, facilitate cultural exchange based on a theme, and are used for city, region and nation branding.”

This year’s was held in Shanghai, and the host city certainly outdid itself in terms presentation.

Skyscrapers of the Future

Your room wouldn’t get a lot of sun, but it would certainly have a great view.

This year, one of the standout entries for eVolo Magazine’s skyscraper design competition is a structure as a tall as the Empire State Building that extends deep underwater.

The imaginative building, also called a sub- or sea-scraper, was designed by Sarly Adre bin Sarkum of Malaysia and intended to contrast with the above-ground entries that dominated the competition.

When it comes to helping the global community recover from natural disasters, engineers are at a distinct advantage. Not only can they build survivor-seeking robots and provide food and clean water for those affected, but they also have the ability to analyze the aftermath of a storm or a quake and help communities be better prepared for such events. Engineering students and professionals across the country are now using their skills to help rebuild the countries of Haiti and Chile after their recent devastating earthquakes.
