Every 15 seconds, one child in the world dies due to contaminated water. This is because approximately 2.6 billion people lack sanitation.
To combat this issue, the revolutionary Peepoo bag was designed to provide people in developing countries with their own portable toilet. The Peepoo bag can be used sitting, squatting, or standing, and can be placed in a small bucket or simply held in your hand (a thin gauze prevents contamination). The bag is clean to handle and remains odor-free for at least 24 hours, making it possible to store in the immediate environment, as well as bury underground.

The Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge gives students the opportunity, tools and inspiration to become agents of change. Through March 15, 2010, elementary and middle school classes across the country will be challenged to create sustainable, reproducible environmental improvements in their classroom or school. Treehugger, one of our favorite green technology blogs, reported on this clever little item last week: a cell phone designed to run on Coca-Cola. The device runs on sugary water (yes, Sprite and Pepsi fans, most sodas will work) by breaking down carbohydrates – sugar – and in an electricity-generating chemical reaction. Not only would this type of phone conserve energy and eventually biodegrade, but it also might save you a few calories!

The future may look greener for New York City: Belgian firm Vincent Callebaut Architectures has designed a winged vertical farm for Roosevelt Island in NYC, called the Dragonfly. This funky, wind and solar-powered structure would stand over 600 meters (close to 2,000 feet) and house the equivalent of 28 agricultural fields. Read more here.
