Contest: 2011 Chicago Rube Goldberg Machine Contest

Rube Goldberg ContestArgonne National Laboratory will sponsor 12 Chicago-area high schools in a Rube Goldberg machine contest to be held at the Chicago Children’s Museum on Friday, Feb. 25, 2011. The 2010 task is to build a complicated machine that takes at least 20 steps to water a plant. Sign-up soon to be one of the 12 participating high schools. Information packets mailed out in November.

Center for Excellence in EducationThe USA Biology Olympiad, from the Center for Excellence in Education, involves nearly 10,000 students annually. It provides the motivation, curricular resources, and skills training to take them beyond their classroom experience to the level of international competitiveness.

Competition: DuPont Challenge Science Essay. Grades 7-12

Rules-EligibilityThe 2011 DuPont Challenge invites students in grades 7-12 to write a 700 to 1,000-word essay discussing a scientific discovery, theory, event, or technological application that has captured their interest. Prize include $5,000-$2,000 U.S. Savings Bonds and a trip to Disney World and the Kennedy Space Center. Application process open Nov. 15, 2010 through Jan. 31, 2011.

Fellowship: STEM Scholarship for Extraordinary Projects

Davidson FellowshipThe 2011 Davidson Fellowships recognize high-achieving young people with scholarships of $50,000, $25,000 or $10,000 that can must be used at any accredited institute of learning. Applicants must submit an original piece of work recognized by experts as significant and with the potential to make a positive contribution to society. Areas in the program include Science, Technology, Mathematics, Music, Literature, Philosophy, or “Outside the Box.” The deadline to apply is March 2, 2011, with preliminary deadlines on February 2 and 16, 2011.
