Surgical Robots to Assemble Inside the Body, Aid in Heart Surgery

ARES is swallowed in parts and assembles inside the body (ARES Project)

How would you feel about having robots crawling around inside of you? Get used to the idea, because Italian scientists have developed a concept robot called ARES, which would assemble inside the human body.

Patients would have to ingest a liquid in order to inflate the stomach and then swallow up to 15 parts which would magnetically assemble once inside the stomach.

The annual Austrian Hexapod Championships may just be the closest thing to a Miss America pageant for six-legged robots. Not only do these crustacean robots race, but they also compete in a choreographed dance portion of the competition.

Event: CSM VEX Robotics Challenge

The College of Southern Maryland, La Plata campus will be using the popular VEX Robotics Competition Clean Sweep game in their Senior division robotics competition on April 10. The Junior division, taking place on the same date, is called “The Save the Bay Robotics Competition,” and it consists of eight robotic challenges designed to mimic the types of tasks a robot would accomplish if it was cleaning up the Chesapeake Bay. The Junior division is for elementary and middle school students, while the Senior division is for high school students. This is a regional event that draws teams from Maryland, D.C., and Northern Virginia.

Robots Clean Up Oil Spill

A rescue squad has been dispatched to help contain an oil spill on the Gulf of Mexico, but this time it’s not the Planeteers – it’s robots.

Since the explosion of a BP oil rig off the coast of New Orleans last week, oil has been leaking underwater at a rate of about 42,000 gallons of oil per day. To combat this hazardous situation, BP and the U.S. Coast Guard have deployed a team of robotic submarines.

The Air Force recently experienced a robot invasion — Lego robots, that is — as hosts of the FIRST LEGO League US Open Championship. This year’s competition in Dayton, Ohio, assembled 60 of the best teams of kids ages 9 to 14, who designed, built, and programmed their robots to tackle a real-world problem.
