Treehugger, one of our favorite green technology blogs, reported on this clever little item last week: a cell phone designed to run on Coca-Cola. The device runs on sugary water (yes, Sprite and Pepsi fans, most sodas will work) by breaking down carbohydrates – sugar – and in an electricity-generating chemical reaction. Not only would this type of phone conserve energy and eventually biodegrade, but it also might save you a few calories!

A couple of creative engineering students at The University of British Columbia have turned a holiday treat into an A+ science project with their report Structural Analysis of Gingerbread. Experiments included subjecting gingerbread to a multitude of stress tests to measure qualities such as density, tensile strength (how well it performs under tension), and flexibility.

Remember the Chem-E Car Competition in Nashville we posted about earlier? Well, it looks like the team of chemical engineering students from Northeastern University have captured first place with their hydrogen-powered vehicle. The Aluminator, as the students named it, is a small car that looks like a toy but is actually capable of producing its own hydrogen fuel – pretty neat! [Boston.com]
