In 2000, the U.S. Navy acknowledged that loud blasts of its sonar helped cause a mass stranding of whales in the Bahamas. And in 2005, 37 whales beached themselves and died along the North Carolina shore after Navy vessels used powerful sonar as part of a training exercise.
Thus, the Office of Naval Research has awarded two three-year grants to advance research on the effects of man-made noises on marine life.

The USA Biology Olympiad, from the Center for Excellence in Education, involves nearly 10,000 students annually. It provides the motivation, curricular resources, and skills training to take them beyond their classroom experience to the level of international competitiveness.

The EPGY Summer Institutes are 2-to-4-week residential programs for academically talented and motivated middle and high-school students. The Summer Institutes provide an opportunity for students to pursue their intellectual curiosity and meet others who share their interests and abilities. Participants are enrolled in a single intensive-study course, taught by a Stanford instructor, and covering topics not typically presented at their grade level. Costs range from $5,900 to $3,175, with limited financial aid. $40 Application fee waived for application submitted by Jan. 13, 2010.

Rebecca Richards-Kortum sees the engineer in everyone. It’s one way this Rice University professor of bioengineering helps undergraduates in many disciplines create solutions to global health problems.
She leads a program called Beyond Traditional Borders, which allows students to tackle specific challenges faced by health care providers in developing countries.
