Engineering Is: Building Virtual Worlds

VR

Virtual reality allows us to experience other worlds, both real and make-believe. Engineers use complex algorithms to build 3-D virtual spaces that fool our senses and make us feel as if we’re really there.

Engineering Is: Creating New Materials

makeup

Nanotechnology is the re-engineering of matter at the atomic and molecular levels. That kind of manipulation means researchers can create brand-new materials that have applications in many areas, including health care, auto-manufacturing, aeronautics, fashion, and cosmetics.

Student Divers Document Coral Reproduction

Staghorn coral

Tampa Bay area students worked closely with scientists from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) this summer to help scientists document and better understand the reproduction of staghorn coral in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

Classified as federally threatened, staghorn coral reproduce only once a year, and the activity is difficult to observe because it lasts for only about 15 minutes in one evening. Scientists had never documented the event in the Florida Keys before.

Haley Carney

Mechanical Engineer
Haley-C
Right now I am studying at the Technical University in Munich, Germany. I started school without knowing any German, but I think it is vital for the future of the world to interact with other countries. Because of Germany’s love for energy and the environment, it is a great place to learn about alternative energy.

Regina Reed

Aerospace Engineer

Regina-ROne of my favorite things about engineering is seeing a project all the way though. As a senior, I was involved in a project along with five other aerospace seniors to build a remote controlled airplane with a 9 ½ foot wing span. The project had many design constraints such as take-off distance, required payloads, and overall size. Working on such a challenging design project allowed me to put my engineering skills to the test and made me realize how important teamwork and determination is not only in an engineering setting but on a day to day basis.
