Da Vinci, the Engineer

We all know Leonardo Da Vinci as the famous Italian Renaissance painter behind the Mona Lisa’s mysterious smile, but you may not know that he was also a prolific inventor and, by modern standards, an engineer. Da Vinci was constantly sketching and planning new contraptions, from parachutes and flying machines to musical instruments, many of which would not be realized for hundreds of years after his death.

Recently Discovery Channel News reported that Da Vinci had yet another unrealized masterpiece in his oeuvre: the flawless design of a colossal horse statue. For a long time historians and engineers thought that the horse had never been made because of technical difficulties, however recently researchers have discovered that this was not the case. Leonardo’s ingenious bronze casting system was perfect, and, had he had sufficient materials to make the statue, it would have likely succeeded.

Aerospace Career & Education Camp at South Dakota State University

ACEAerospace Career & Education (ACE) Camp enables students to make more informed decisions as they consider college & career options. This five day camp hosted at SDSU every July provides students the opportunity to fly a private plane, visit the Air National Guard and fly the F-16 simulator, obtain over 2 hours of flight instruction, visit and tour a wind farm, learn about satellite imagery, astronomy and more.

ASEE’s NASA Aeronautics Scholarship Program

It is expected that approximately 20 two-year undergraduate scholarships and 5 two-year graduate scholarships will be awarded annually to students in Aeronautics and related fields. The program is open to U.S. Citizens who are enrolled in an accredited U.S. college or university. Undergraduate students will receive up to $15,000 awarded for each school year, to be used for tuition, room and board, or other school-related costs. Graduate students will receive up to $35,000 awarded for each school year, to be used for tuition, room and board, or other school-related costs. All students will have the opportunity to attend a summer internship at a NASA Research Center with a summer stipend up to $10,000.
