Ancient Olympians saw no need for clothes, but today, sports apparel is an important part of athletes’ performance. Maybe too much so, some say.
In February 2008, Speedo released a new racing suit that caused an uproar in the world of swimming. The LZR racer, worn by 23 world-record-breaking athletes in the Beijing Olympics, was developed with the help of NASA scientists. It is designed not only to reduce drag but also to align a swimmer’s body into the most hydrodynamic position. Researchers at Speedo used computational fluid dynamics – a branch of mechanics that uses mathematics to model the flow of water and other fluids – to engineer the suit. Results were amazing. But the LZR boosted pool performances to such an extent that officials began to question its legality.

Aerospace Career & Education (ACE) Camp enables students to make more informed decisions as they consider college & career options. This five day camp hosted at SDSU every July provides students the opportunity to fly a private plane, visit the Air National Guard and fly the F-16 simulator, obtain over 2 hours of flight instruction, visit and tour a wind farm, learn about satellite imagery, astronomy and more.

It is expected that approximately 20 two-year undergraduate scholarships and 5 two-year graduate scholarships will be awarded annually to students in Aeronautics and related fields. The program is open to U.S. Citizens who are enrolled in an accredited U.S. college or university. Undergraduate students will receive up to $15,000 awarded for each school year, to be used for tuition, room and board, or other school-related costs. Graduate students will receive up to $35,000 awarded for each school year, to be used for tuition, room and board, or other school-related costs. All students will have the opportunity to attend a summer internship at a NASA Research Center with a summer stipend up to $10,000.
