Happy Birthday, Gustave Eiffel
Wired’s “This Day In Tech” blog reports that on this same day in 1832, Gustave Eiffel, a French structural engineer, was born in Dijon. Does his name sound familiar?
In addition to designing the Eiffel Tower and the internal framework for the Statue of Liberty, his “other engineering works include the Porto viaduct over Portugal’s River Douro, the Pest railway station in Hungary, and the Nice observatory dome and Sioule Bridge in France.” He was also “the chief engineer of the locks in the unsuccessful French effort to build the Panama Canal.”
