Girls are encouraged to join their families and teachers at UT for an afternoon of engineering fun. Girl Day gives 1st through 8th grade students a chance to have fun doing grade-specific, hands-on engineering activities; meet students, professors and engineers from industry; and see what it’s like to be an engineer. Kids Career Day, Feb. 13, 2010, is a half day program at the University of Akron, OH, designed to involve girls grades 1-5 in activities related to engineering, science, technology, and math careers. Each activity showcases professional women currently employed as scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. Registration deadline: Jan. 15, 2010. Cost: $6.

The National Society of Black Engineers Pre-College Initiative (PCI) Program is designed to stimulate interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields and to encourage students in grades K–12 to attend college and pursue technical degrees. Student members have access to scholarships, a national conference, Bridge magazine, and other benefits. The website also provides downloadable curriculum units.

In this essay contest of EngineerGirl!, National Academy of Engineering, students are challenged to think like an engineer to solve a survival problem. In their essays, they must describe how to use the contents of a backpack and the surrounding environment to create shelter, gather food and water, or summon rescue.
