Scholarships that target students interested in engineering provide an excellent way to help pay for the rising costs of higher education. Since engineering scholarships are plentiful and come from a variety of sources, such as corporations, non-profits, foundations, institutions, and governmental bodies, future engineers have a host of opportunities available to them.

The 2011 Davidson Fellowships recognize high-achieving young people with scholarships of $50,000, $25,000 or $10,000 that can must be used at any accredited institute of learning. Applicants must submit an original piece of work recognized by experts as significant and with the potential to make a positive contribution to society. Areas in the program include Science, Technology, Mathematics, Music, Literature, Philosophy, or “Outside the Box.” The deadline to apply is March 2, 2011, with preliminary deadlines on February 2 and 16, 2011.

The National Society of Black Engineers Pre-College Initiative (PCI) Program is designed to stimulate interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields and to encourage students in grades K–12 to attend college and pursue technical degrees. Student members have access to scholarships, a national conference, Bridge magazine, and other benefits. The website also provides downloadable curriculum units.
