The EPGY Summer Institutes are 2-to-4-week residential programs for academically talented and motivated middle and high-school students. The Summer Institutes provide an opportunity for students to pursue their intellectual curiosity and meet others who share their interests and abilities. Participants are enrolled in a single intensive-study course, taught by a Stanford instructor, and covering topics not typically presented at their grade level. Costs range from $5,900 to $3,175, with limited financial aid. $40 Application fee waived for application submitted by Jan. 13, 2010.

At the Science Saturdays program, Montana State U., kids ages 10-15 (younger ones welcome if with a parent) participate in hands-on experiments, learn about exciting new projects, and meet the scientists and MSU students shaping the future in Montana. Disney’s Planet Challenge project-based environmental competition for 4th – 6th grade classrooms invites students to identify a local environmental issue and devise a solution that they manage and document from start to finish. Classrooms develop a portfolio to be evaluated on environmental-relevance, student learning, changes in practices and attitudes, community involvement, lasting benefits to students, school and/or community and originality. In this essay contest of EngineerGirl!, National Academy of Engineering, students are challenged to think like an engineer to solve a survival problem. In their essays, they must describe how to use the contents of a backpack and the surrounding environment to create shelter, gather food and water, or summon rescue.
