In 1999 the K-12 Outreach group was formed in the Office of Academic Affairs. Since then, the staff has impacted an average of 5000 students in North Carolina annually, in addition to 500 teachers. They have also participated in local, state and national collaborations to advance science, technology, engineering and math instruction in K-12 schools.

The SWE Weekend of Engineering is a fun weekend of exploration for high school women held each fall and spring semester and sponsored by the Society of Women Engineers. The program, which begins on a Saturday morning and ends on a Sunday afternoon, is an opportunity to learn about engineering as well as get a taste for college life KU Style.

The vision of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology)is “to transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes.”
FIRST, founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen, designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills.

Girls Researching Our World is a year round program for middle school girls. All events are designed to help girls explore the fields of science, technology, engineering & mathematics (STEM). Saturday events during the school year are themed around how scientists and engineers make the world a better place. During the summer girls who have completed the 6th and 7th grades are invited to a three day residential camp that provides a wide variety of hands-on STEM activities.

This biennial one day conference is for 5th – 8th grade girls. On a Saturday in the fall, girls come to Humboldt State University to be engineers, scientists and mathematicians.
