Essay Contest: Middle and High School, Richmond, VA

In celebration of National Engineers Week, the Richmond Joint Engineers’ Council (RJEC) is conducting its annual Essay Contest for Middle and High School students in the Richmond/Petersburg area.
This year, an additional category has been included to allow students to better demonstrate their creativity and use of technology. The contest is intended to stimulate interest and learning of engineers, their careers and the engineering profession.
CONTEST 1: Technology – representation of an Engineer
The contest: submit your interpretation or best representation of an engineer or an engineering career, ie. What does a Chemical Engineer do and/or how do they perform their job? The student’s interpretation maybe displayed by a video, power point, slide-show or other media format. The entire presentation must be less than 120 seconds.
All entries should be submitted by a teacher. Teachers must select the top 3 from each class and submit them to the RJEC by Wednesday, Jan. 20th, 2010. Technology entries may be posted via youtube.com. If a submission is via youtube.com then the title MUST include RJEC10 within the title and the link sent to the following email address: rjecessay@rjec.org

All submissions must include a title page with the following information:
• Title
• Author’s name, grade and age
• Author’s contact information
• School name, address and phone number
• Teacher’s name and contact information (email is preferred)
• The title should appear on the presentation
• The author’s name and school should NOT appear on the presentation
Prize winners: 1st = $200 2nd = $125 3rd = $ 75
Entries will be judged by the Advisory Board of the RJEC on originality, creativity, accuracy and relevance of the job description and use of technology. Finalists, with a parent or teacher will be invited to the annual RJEC banquet to be held during Engineer’s Week on February 18, 2010. This will be an excellent opportunity for students to interact with a broad spectrum of the Richmond engineering community. The winning entry will be shown during the awards program. Note: all submissions will be considered an open source.

The contest: Write an essay of your interpretation or best representation of an engineering career, ie. What does a Chemical Engineer do and/or how do they perform their job?
• The essay should be e-mailed in Microsoft Word (doc) format to: rjecessay@rjec.org
• The body of essay text is limited to 500 words; this does not include the title page and/or the bibliography.
• The essay should be double-spaced, on single sided numbered pages with a 1” margins.
• The essay should be printed with a 12 point Arial or New Times Roman font.
• Any and all references clearly identified and follow MLA format.
• The title of the essay, but not the author’s name, must appear on the top of the first page of the essay text.
