Girls, Engineering, Math & Science (GEMS) at South Dakota State University

GEMSThis one day workshop for 8th grade girls provides an opportunity to explore interests in science and technology. This workshop is scheduled every March on the SDSU campus. During the workshop students will interact with professional women from industry as well as with professors and students from SDSU. The goals of this workshop are to introduce 8th grade girls to engineering, math, and science through a highly dynamic program of hands-on activities, increase student and parent knowledge of engineering, math and science with regard to academic prepartion and professional opportunities, provide an environment that facilitates learning and excitement about engineering, science and math and inspire 8th grade girls to continue to pursue the courses of study introduced in the workshop.

MATE International ROV Competition

MATEThe Marine Advanced Technology Education Center (MATE) Center coordinates an international student ROV competition and a network of regional ROV contests that take place across the world. Student teams from middle schools, high schools, home schools, community colleges, and universities participate in the events, which consist of different “classes” that vary depending on the sophistication of the ROVs and the mission requirements.

ILLThe USC Viterbi School’s Engineering Writing Program publishes the online magazine Illumin (http://illumin.usc.edu) as an educational resource. Illumin’s mission is to be a “review of engineering in everyday life,” explaining the relevance of engineering practice to common, non-engineering activities.
