Ashton Santine

Chemical Engineer

Engineering can be difficult and challenging, but that is what I enjoy most about it.  When I was a junior in high school, I got a terrible grade on my first chemistry test and I wanted to quit the class after two weeks.

But I stuck with it and now I am a chemical engineering major at Oklahoma State and I love it.

This year I will be competing for my school in the Chem-E-Car Competition, which is run by AIChE (American Institute of Chemical Engineering.)  The goal is to create a remote-sized car that runs off of a chemical reaction. Last year I helped with the team’s poster, but this year I will actually work on the car’s construction and design.

During the school year, I work in an after school engineering program for girls at Stillwater Middle School.  We work on projects that relate engineering to the girls’ lives since a lot of them have no idea what engineering is.

I also had an internship this summer at the National Science Foundation in Washington D.C., where I worked in the Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental and Transport Systems Division (CBET.)

My freshman year at Oklahoma State I lived in Maude’s Quad, a living and learning community for women in engineering, architecture and technology.  The quad is named after Maude Spear, who was the first woman to graduate in engineering from Oklahoma A&M University in 1915.

Living in that community was very helpful because I made lasting friendships with girls who had the same academic interests as me, and it helped me stay on track in school.  I am also a member of Kappa Delta Sorority.
