Maker Faire is a two-day extravaganza that features a diverse collection of projects from garage inventors and tinkerers across the nation.

The annual Austrian Hexapod Championships may just be the closest thing to a Miss America pageant for six-legged robots. Not only do these crustacean robots race, but they also compete in a choreographed dance portion of the competition.

Robots Clean Up Oil Spill

A rescue squad has been dispatched to help contain an oil spill on the Gulf of Mexico, but this time it’s not the Planeteers – it’s robots.

Since the explosion of a BP oil rig off the coast of New Orleans last week, oil has been leaking underwater at a rate of about 42,000 gallons of oil per day. To combat this hazardous situation, BP and the U.S. Coast Guard have deployed a team of robotic submarines.

Robotic Arm Based on Elephant Trunk

The good folks at Festo are up to their usual biomimicry mischief again. This time, they’ve made a robotic appendage based on the fluid dexterity of an elephant trunk. The “hands” of this new mechanical arm are sensitive enough to grab items as fragile as a tomato without harming them, making it ideal for manufacturing.

African Student Builds Walking Robot from TV Parts

This week (and pretty much every other week), our enthusiasm for robots knows no bounds.

In another example of African ingenuity, a Tongolese student named Sam Togo has made a walking humanoid robot using only spare TV parts. Sam says that the next steps for his robot (named SAM10) will be to program it to sense objects in its path and to greet people with a “hello.” Watch a video after the jump.
