HENAAC Scholars Program

Great Minds in STEM has a goal of providing over $250,000 in scholarships in 2010. Scholarship dollar amounts range from $500 to $5,000. The total number of scholarships awarded will be based on final contributions given to the scholarship program by July 30, 2010.*

Basic Scholarship Requirements:

• Applicants must demonstrate leadership through academic achievements and campus/community activities
• Applicants must be Science, Technology, Engineering or Math related majors
• Applicants must have an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher
• Applicants must be of Hispanic origin and/or must significantly participate in and promote organizations and activities in the Hispanic community

Each Scholarship Recipient Will Receive:

• A scholarship ranging in amounts from $500 to $5,000
• Listing and photo in the HENAAC Conference issue of TECHNiCA Magazine
• Press Release on Great Minds in STEM website
• Complimentary registration and hotel accommodations to the HENAAC 2010 Career Conference and Awards Show. Qualifying students may also receive transportation support.
• Recipients will be awarded at the HENAAC Conference at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena
Vista, Florida on October 7-10, 2010. Recipients MUST attend the conference to receive the scholarship.

• Completed application form
• A 700 word essay:
As we become increasingly involved as members of a global community, particularly in the fields of science and engineering, how do you see your major contributing to global efforts and technology? In addition, how will you, in your field of study, contribute to global progress as well as actively contribute to your local communities?
• Current resume
• One letter of recommendation from a peer in a campus or community organization

• One letter of recommendation from an advisor or faculty member
• Official transcript with the official seal of your high school.

How to Apply: Great Minds in STEM encourages all engineering, applied science, computer science and math students to apply this year. Here are the steps you should follow to submit your 2010 application:

1. Download the 2010 application.
2. Submit your completed application, transcript, letters of recommendation, essay and resume in one envelope by the postmark date of April 30, 2010.
3. You only need to submit one application and accompanying materials to be considered for all the sponsored scholarships. Great Minds in STEM will determine the various scholarships you quality for based on your submitted application.
4. Great Minds in STEM will send you a postcard confirmation by May 30, 2010 indicating that your application is either complete or incomplete.
5. The Selection Committee will meet to determine the 2010 scholarship recipients.
6. If you were selected as a 2010 HENAAC scholar, you will be notified no later than July 31, 2010.
7. All Great Minds in STEM scholarships will be presented and awarded at the Annual HENAAC Conference in Lake Buena Vista, FL on October 7-10, 2010.
8. Great Minds in STEM provides complimentary registration and hotel accommodations for all scholarship recipients. Qualifying students may also receive transportation support.
9. Scholarship recipients MUST attend the conference to receive the scholarship.

The American Indian Science and Engineering Society Columbia River Chapter

located in Richland, Washington, is proud to announce its Seventh Annual Scholarship Program. The Program is a way to financially assist American Indian students seeking degrees in math, science, engineering, business and health.

The AISES-CRC Scholarship Program will award scholarships to qualified American Indian applicants — high school or college students — enrolled full-time who reside in Washington, Idaho or Oregon. Candidates must show proof of Tribal Affiliation.

The scholarships winners will be announced in February, 2010. Need not be present to win. If you have any questions regarding the scholarships, send mail to aises@aisescrc.org.

Scholarship FAQ

Who is eligible for this scholarship?

Students must currently be attending high school or college. Post-graduate students are also eligible. Student must be at least 1/4 American Indian blood or at least 1/4 Alaskan Native. Student must be a member of tribe claimed and must be able to provide documentation to confirm.

Do I have to be from the Mid-Columbia area?

No, but you do need to be from Washington, Oregon or Idaho. You can be attending a school outside the area, but your permanant residency must be from Washington, Oregon or Idaho.

What do I need to provide to apply?

We require transcripts from your most recent school, whether high school or college, a personal essay, tribal enrollment documentation, 2 letters of recommendation and a completed application.

How much is the scholarship for and how many are awarded?

This year the scholarships are for $1000 each and $500. We will award up to (2) $1000 scholarships and (1) $500 scholarship.

Essay Competition: DuPont Challenge

The 24th annual DuPont Challenge© Science Essay Competition is now accepting entries through January 31, 2010. Designed to inspire young people to excel in scientific writing, the competition invites students in 7th through 12th grade to research and write a 700- to 1,000-word essay about a scientific discovery, theory, event or technological application. Essays are judged on mechanics and conventions; ideas and content; organization; style and creativity; and voice. Winners receive savings bonds up to $5,000 and an expenses paid trip to Walt Disney World and the Kennedy Space Center. The program also rewards the contributions of the winning students’ teachers with accompanying trips, $500 education grants, and sponsorship to attend the 2011 NSTA National Conference on Science Education in San Francisco.

AHETEMS Scholarship Program

The Advancing Hispanic Excellence in Technology, Engineering, Math, and Science (AHETEMS) Scholarship Program is designed to enhance and achieve the potential of Latino students pursuing degrees in engineering, math and science. Merit-based and need-based scholarships are awarded, in the amount of $1,000 – $5,000, to deserving Latino/a high school graduating seniors, undergraduate students, and graduate students who demonstrate both significant motivation and aptitude for a career in science, technology, engineering or mathematics.

Several scholarships are offered under this program. Please see the details about each:

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Postmarked by April 1. The application period for the 2010-2011 academic year will open in January 2010.

ELIGIBILITY: Eligibility requirements differ for each scholarship. However, all scholarships require a minimum 3.0 GPA both at the time of application and throughout the scholarship period, and students must be registered full time (12 hrs undergraduate / 9 hrs graduate) in a science, technology, engineering, or math discipline. Please refer back to this Web site for updated scholarship postings.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: Applicants complete and submit only one AHETEMS Scholarship Program Application for all the scholarships. In general the application package includes:

The Wire Reinforcement Institute

The Wire Reinforcement Institute (WRI) Education Foundation was formed for the specific purpose of funding and awarding academic scholarships to qualified high school seniors and current undergraduate and graduate level students intending to or presently pursuing four year or graduate level degrees in structural and/or civil engineering at accredited four year universities or colleges. Scholarships, awarded will not exceed one year and will be awarded for a specified academic year only. Awarded scholarship funds, ranging up to $10,000, will be paid by the WRI directly to the university or college designated by the recipient.

ASCO Numatics Industrial Automation Engineering Scholarships

ASCO Numatics will award two, $5,000 scholarships to U.S. engineering students who are pursuing careers in industrial automation-related disciplines. Additionally, ASCO Numatics will make $1,000 grants to the engineering departments of the colleges in which the winners are enrolled. The scholarships are merit-based and will be awarded on the candidate’s potential for leadership and for making a significant contribution to the engineering, instrumentation, systems, and automation professions, particularly as they relate to the application of fluid control and fluid power technologies. Scholarship recipients may be eligible for an ASCO Numatics internship.

The University of Maine Microelectronics Scholarship Consortium

The University of Maine Microelectronics Scholarship Consortium will provide merit-based scholarships and co-op work experience to promising first-year, sophomore, junior, and senior students interested in microelectronics/semiconductor industry and majoring in either engineering or science at the University of Maine. For the 2009-2010 academic year, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors will be eligible for a $7,500 academic scholarship; First-year students entering the University of Maine are eligible for a $1,500 academic scholarship. Students must demonstrate academic promise and the potential to become active members of the microelectronics/semiconductor industry through work experience, course selection, and participation in professional organizations.

ASEE’s NASA Aeronautics Scholarship Program

It is expected that approximately 20 two-year undergraduate scholarships and 5 two-year graduate scholarships will be awarded annually to students in Aeronautics and related fields. The program is open to U.S. Citizens who are enrolled in an accredited U.S. college or university. Undergraduate students will receive up to $15,000 awarded for each school year, to be used for tuition, room and board, or other school-related costs. Graduate students will receive up to $35,000 awarded for each school year, to be used for tuition, room and board, or other school-related costs. All students will have the opportunity to attend a summer internship at a NASA Research Center with a summer stipend up to $10,000.

ASEE’s SMART Scholarship

This scholarship program provides students with a stipend allowance, full tuition, book allowance, room and board and other normal educational expenses. The purpose of the program is to promote the education, recruitment and retention of undergraduate and graduate students in science, mathematics and engineering studies. The SMART Scholarship for Service Program is open only to citizens of the United States, and students must be at least 18 years of age to be eligible. There is an employment obligation to the DoD with this scholarship program.

ASEE’s SEAP Program at the Office of Naval Research

The Science and Engineering Apprentice Program (SEAP) provides an opportunity for students to participate in research at a Department of Navy (DoN) laboratory during the summer.

The goals of SEAP are to encourage participating students to pursue science and engineering careers, to further their education via mentoring by laboratory personnel and their participation in research, and to make them aware of DoN Research and technology efforts, which can lead to employment within the DoN.

SEAP provides competitive research internships to approximately 250 high school students each year. Participating students spend eight weeks during the summer doing research at approximately 15 DoN laboratories.

This program is intended for high school students who have completed at least Grade 9. SEAP is an eight week summer research opportunity at participating ONR laboratories. Applicants must be 16 years of age for most Laboratories, and U.S. citizens. A competitive stipend is available. The application cycle is from October to February.

SWE Scholarship Program

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to women admitted to accredited baccalaureate or graduate programs, in preparation for careers in engineering, engineering technology and computer science. In fiscal year 2008, SWE disbursed more than 130 new and renewed scholarships valued at more than $400,000.

Grants are announced in the summer (sophomore, junior, senior and graduate students) and late summer/early fall (freshmen and reentry students) for use during the following academic year. Grant payments are made in the fall for corporate-sponsored scholarships and in both the fall and spring for endowed scholarships, upon proof of registration.
