Scholarships that target students interested in engineering provide an excellent way to help pay for the rising costs of higher education. Since engineering scholarships are plentiful and come from a variety of sources, such as corporations, non-profits, foundations, institutions, and governmental bodies, future engineers have a host of opportunities available to them.

The Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program is an opportunity for students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines to receive a full scholarship and be gainfully employed upon degree completion.

Participants in the SMART Scholarship for Service Program receive:

• Full tuition and education related fees
• Cash award paid at a rate of $25,000 – $41,000
• Paid summer internships
• Health Insurance reimbursement allowance up to $1,200 per calendar year
• Book allowance of $1,000 per academic year
• Mentoring
• Employment placement after graduation with the Department of Defense

Middle school students will be nominated to compete in the Broadcom MASTERS at SSP-affiliated science fairs held in the 2010-2011 school year.  Nominees will enter the competition by completing an online application where they will explain their science project and demonstrate their use of STEM principles – science, technology, engineering and math – in the development and presentation of their project.

From national entrants, 300 Semifinalists will be selected, including 30 Finalists who win an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., where they will compete for awards and prizes, including the top education award of $25,000 presented by the Samueli Foundation, a gift of Susan and Henry Samueli, a founder of Broadcom Corporation.

This year Google, in partnership with Lego, CERN, National Geographic and Scientific American, is hosting their first global online science fair.

Who: Registration is open to anyone worldwide aged 13-18.

What: The Grand Prize winner (or winning team) will receive an incredible 10-day trip to the Galapagos Islands, along with $50,000 to be used towards the winners’ education. They will also have their choice of internship opportunities with each sponsoring company.

HENAAC Scholars Program

Great Minds in STEM has a goal of providing over $250,000 in scholarships in 2010. Scholarship dollar amounts range from $500 to $5,000. The total number of scholarships awarded will be based on final contributions given to the scholarship program by July 30, 2011.

In its 25th year, the DuPont Challenge Science Essay Competition is one of the premiere science competitions in North America, inspiring students to excel in scientific writing. The DuPont Challenge has students write a 700 to 1,000 word essay discussing a scientific discovery, theory, event, or technological application that has captured their interest. Essays are judged based on ideas and content, mechanics and conventions, organization, style, creativity, and originality. All entries must be received by midnight Jan. 31, 2011. The DuPont Challenge attracts more than 10,000 entries annually.

Eligibility

• Students currently enrolled in grades 7 through 12.
• Students attending public, private, or home schools in the United States, Canada, or their territories.
• Students enrolled in Department of Defense schools, grades 7–12 (see the FAQ for how to enter addresses).
• Previous winners of The DuPont Challenge©.
• Students graduating from high school before 2011 are NOT eligible.

Divisions

Students from grades 7-12 are eligible to take part in the DuPont Challenge, and essays are evaluated in two divisions: Junior Division (grades 7, 8, and 9) and Senior Division (grades 10, 11, and 12). Each division is judged by National Science Teachers Association (NSTA)-selected science teachers from across the United States, and scientists from NASA and DuPont.

Awards

In each division, the first, second, and third-place winners will receive $5,000, $3,000, and $2,000 U.S. Savings Bonds, respectively. All three winners in each division will receive an expenses-paid trip to The Walt Disney World® Resort and Kennedy Space Center, accompanied by a parent. Honorable mentions will each receive a $200 U.S. Savings Bond.

2010 Winners

In 2010, a seventh-grader at Tower Hill School in Wilmington, DE, was awarded First Place in the Junior Division for his essay exploring the use of algae as sustainable biofuel; Alex Sincere, a junior at Evanston Township High School in Evanston, IL, was awarded First Place in the Senior Division for an essay about stem cell research on mice that could lead to a treatment for human blindness.

AHETEMS  Scholarship Program

The Advancing Hispanic Excellence in Technology, Engineering, Math, and Science (AHETEMS) Scholarship Program is designed to enhance and achieve the potential of Latino students pursuing degrees in engineering, math and science. Merit-based and need-based scholarships are awarded, in the amount of $1,000 – $5,000, to deserving Latino/a high school graduating seniors, undergraduate students, and graduate students who demonstrate both significant motivation and aptitude for a career in science, technology, engineering or mathematics.

ELIGIBILITY: Eligibility requirements differ for each scholarship. However, all scholarships require a  minimum 3.0 GPA both at the time of application and throughout the scholarship period, and students must be registered full time (12 hrs undergraduate / 9 hrs graduate) in a science, technology, engineering, or math discipline. APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

1. Complete the online scholarship application.

2. Print a copy of the Scholarship Application page, after you submit your application.

3. Download the Scholarship Certification Form from the AHETEMS Web site.

4. Mail the Scholarship Certification Form, Official Transcript, Personal Statement, Resume and Letter of Recommendation to AHETEMS postmarked by April 1. Mail applications to:

ASCO Numatics will award two, $5,000 scholarships to U.S. engineering students who are pursuing careers in industrial automation-related disciplines. Additionally, ASCO Numatics will make $1,000 grants to the engineering departments of the colleges in which the winners are enrolled.

The scholarships are merit-based and will be awarded on the candidate’s potential for leadership and for making a significant contribution to the engineering, instrumentation, systems, and automation professions, particularly as they relate to the application of fluid control and fluid power technologies.

Scholarship recipients may be eligible for an ASCO Numatics internship.
