At age 11 she discovered the show Bionic Woman, where a badly injured athlete is given artificial limbs that grant her superhero-like abilities, and decided that she wanted to create technologically advanced prosthetics when she grew up. Howard later realized that medical school held little appeal to her, and instead opted to pursue robotics.

It's fortunate that she did. After completely her PhD in electrical engineering at UC Berkeley, Howard went on to work at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory where she led research teams to develop software for Mars-roving robots.

Science fiction stories have served as inspiration for many a brilliant engineer, and Ayanna Howard is no exception.

It’s fortunate that she did. After completely her Ph.D. in electrical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, Howard went on to work at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory where she led research teams to develop software for Mars-roving robots. Her time at NASA won her many distinctions, among them the Lew Allen Award (JPL’s highest distinction for leadership and research), and garnered her a mention in MIT Technology Review’s 2003 list of top innovators under 35.

Howard currently serves as an associate professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. One of her more recent projects has been creating autonomous robots, called SnowMotes, to explore icy regions in the arctic for the purpose of gathering climate data. In her spare time, Howard spreads her enthusiasm for robotics and engineering through community outreach projects, speaking at schools and hosting robotics camps for middle and high school students.

Her advice to aspiring engineers? Enjoy yourselves. “Don’t be afraid that being interested in math or science [means] that you won’t be able to have fun,” she says on her NASA profile page.

Here’s a fun and simple explanation of her work with robots, from Dragonfly TV:

Yves Rossy really likes jumping out of planes. At 52, the Swiss fighter pilot is the first person daring enough to strap a jet-powered wing to his back and soar over landmarks such as the English Channel, the Swiss Alps, and the Grand Canyon – feats which have earned him the nickname “Jetman.”

Although Rossy’s primary career has been that of pilot and daredevil, his journey to become Jetman produced him many engineering achievements as well. For the past two decades, Rossy has spent much of his free time pursuing a goal of flying with as little assistance as possible. This quest began in 1993 with the development of wingsuits and later an inflatable wing. In 2004, Rossy decided to turbo charge his wing using small jet engines, and changed the wing material to a sturdier carbon fiber.

Since then Jetman has been making successful flights all over the world, with some lasting as long as 18 minutes. He continues to make improvements to his unique jet-wing system and to hone his skills at handling the wing. Here’s an amazing new video where he manages to fly in formation with two adjacent airplanes:

Perhaps those jet packs we imagine for the future might not be so far off.

Swift as a rocket on the field, University of Miami football player Nathan Gholston is aiming for the stars in more ways than one. The senior undergraduate is also studying aerospace engineering, and dreams of one day designing spacecrafts for NASA and starting his own consulting firm, reports The Miami Herald.

Playing football wasn’t always in Gholston’s plans. After transferring to Miami in 2008, however, a friend and fellow track-and-field teammate convinced him to try out, and his impressive sprinting landed him a spot as a walk-on. Now Gholston plays on the special teams, where his speed is utilized for kickoff plays and punt returns.

Between returning kicks and snatching errant fumbles, Gholston has found time to participate in an international flight design competition, and to pursue his love of literature (he recently finished reading The Art of War, a 700-page tome written in China around 500 B.C.).

Gholston’s mother, one of only a few female electricians at a Ford Motor Company plant, has provided him with unfailing support over the years. She has yet to miss any of her son’s football games. But, Gholston says in an interview with his hometown sports news site Plymouth Canton Sports, “My mom is more proud of me for going after a degree in aerospace engineering than she is for anything I’ve done on the football field.”

Watch Gholston in action here, starting at 3:50:

Scholarships that target students interested in engineering provide an excellent way to help pay for the rising costs of higher education. Since engineering scholarships are plentiful and come from a variety of sources, such as corporations, non-profits, foundations, institutions, and governmental bodies, future engineers have a host of opportunities available to them.

Below is a list of the engineering scholarships we’ve found, as well as collections that other websites have compiled. (NOTE: Links go directly to scholarship pages.)
Mark Rober, this costume’s proud creator, works as a Mechanical Engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Gizmodo reports that he has spent the past 5 years developing hardware for the next Mars Rover, set to launch this Thanksgiving. Clearly he does some pretty amazing things in his spare time, as well. Props to the most creatively engineered costume this year!

What do the blockbuster movie Avatar, high-performance sports gear, the Angry Birds phone app, and pollution-eating bacteria have in common? They are among a host of fascinating innovations developed by engineers and featured in the newest edition of the American Society for Engineering Education’s (ASEE) Engineering, Go For It magazine.

The publication is now available in our online store. You can find a free preview of the magazine here.

The kid-friendly magazine is part of ASEE’s campaign to inspire more K-12 students, particularly young women and underrepresented minorities, to pursue engineering careers. Illustrating how engineers make a difference in the world, the new edition includes:

Stories featuring robots that imitate animals, Hollywood special effects, clean energy innovations, and technological advances giving athletes a winning edge.

Engaging profiles on an array of engineering careers and disciplines.

Fresh, cutting-edge examples of engineering innovations that are transforming fields from aerospace and medical care to architecture and materials science.

Interviews with eight students currently participating in the Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship sponsored by the Department of Defense and administered by ASEE

In addition to producing a print magazine, eGFI blogs weekly for students and teachers, and can be found on Facebook and Twitter.

New spacecraft may soon be fulfilling tourists’ astronautical dreams.

Want to indulge your inner Buzz Lightyear? You soon may have that chance. Space tourism, once an idea confined to science fiction, is fast becoming a reality. Teams of engineers at several companies are furiously developing spacecraft to send tourists on suborbital flights into space, perhaps as early as next year. Space travel for the masses won’t come cheap. At a minimum, it’ll cost you around $100,000 to become a real astronaut and gaze down upon Earth. Despite the astronomical prices, space tourists may number 20,000 per year by 2020. Here’s a look at five pioneers of a burgeoning industry.

VIRGIN GALACTIC
British entrepreneur Richard Branson, whose Virgin brand encompasses everything from airlines to Internet services, expects his venture soon will be whizzing tourists into space. A mother ship, the WhiteKnightTwo, will carry the six-passenger SpaceShipTwo (below) to 50,000 feet. At that point, SpaceShipTwo — which is named VSS Enterprise and has now flown solo seven times since its public roll-out in December 2009 — will rocket beyond the stratosphere to a peak altitude of 62 miles. Voyagers will experience weightlessness and unearthly views. The price? A steep $200,000. Nevertheless, Virgin Galactic has already booked more than 400 reservations. It also has built a cool, eco-friendly spaceport in the New Mexico desert designed by iconic architects Foster + Partners.

BLUE ORIGIN
Backed by Jeff Bezos, the billionaire founder of Amazon.com, Blue Origin hopes to start weekly treks into space by 2012 from a port in rural Texas. Blue Origin’s craft, the New Shepard, is a cone-shaped, computer-controlled rocket that will carry three passengers and take off and land vertically. The company has successfully tested a prototype of the craft several times, but suffered a setback on August 24, 2011, when a high-altitude test went awry, causing the rocket to crash.

SPACE ADVENTURES

So far, only a handful of extremely rich civilians have journeyed into space as tourists, thanks to Space Adventures. The Virginia-based company books passengers aboard the Russian Soyuz rockets that routinely fly to the International Space Station in orbit approximately 215 miles above Earth. Google cofounder Sergey Brin plunked down $5 million toward the $30 million trip. Space Adventures also is booking seats on a planned 2015 mission to circumnavigate the moon and announced the first passenger had signed on for $150 million. For non-billionaires, the company has been working with Armadillo Aerospace to develop a suborbital spacecraft that will whisk a pilot and three passengers to an altitude of 62 miles. The bargain price: $102,000.

EADS ASTRIUM
This subsidiary of EADS, the European aeronautics company that makes Airbus jetliners, is working on a rocket the size of a business jet that will shoot four passengers 60 miles into space for three minutes of gravity-free fun. The Spaceplane project, which was unveiled in 2007, is expected to take at least seven years to develop and certify a rocket-powered aircraft able to take off and land at civilian airports. Cost: at least $240,000.

XCOR AEROSPACE
For budget-minded budding astronauts, there’s this California manufacturer of rockets and engines. XCOR is building — and expects to test in 2012 — a pocket-sized rocket plane called Lynx that will zap a pilot and one passenger 38 miles into space for a 90-second taste of weightlessness. Cost: a mere $95,000. Ticket sales on the Lynx began April 1, 2011. First passengers include a Victoria’s Secret model and major league baseball pitching coach.

These ventures won’t blast tourists to infinity — and certainly not beyond. But cutting-edge engineering ensures they’ll soon be providing infinitely amazing adventures.
